Makorty Reservoir, reservoir in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine
Makorty Reservoir is a large reservoir in Ukraine built along the Saksahan River near Kryvyi Rih. The water body stretches approximately 60 kilometers in length with a narrow width of around 350 meters, featuring an average depth of 4 meters that reaches over 30 meters in deeper sections.
The reservoir was built in 1958 to provide water for local industries and farming. Named after the nearby village of Makorti, it has since regulated the Saksahan River's flow for drinking water supply, agriculture, and industrial use including steel production.
Trails run along the gentle shores, making walking and outdoor activities accessible to most visitors. Summer months offer swimming and fishing opportunities, while winter ice reaches about 20 inches (50 centimeters) thick, creating conditions for winter activities on the frozen surface.
The water surface blooms with tiny algae during warmer months, creating a shimmering appearance that returns each summer and fall. This seasonal phenomenon enriches the ecological habitat and gives the water a distinctive look at particular times of the year.
