Azure Swimming Pool, Indoor swimming pool in Pripyat, Ukraine
Azure Swimming Pool is an indoor facility in the now deserted town of Pripyat, Ukraine, built during the Soviet era for local residents. The main hall holds a tiled pool basin with marked swimming lanes, and daylight now enters through empty window frames where glass once covered entire walls.
The complex opened in the 1970s as part of the newly founded settlement and continued operating for more than a decade after the 1986 evacuation. Cleanup crews and plant technicians used the hall until 1998, when the site finally closed its doors.
The facility served workers from the power plant as a central recreation site and represents how Soviet planners envisioned community leisure in industrial towns. Changing rooms and faded signs remain along the walls, showing where families and young people once gathered for training and relaxation.
Access to the hall is only possible within guided tours of the exclusion zone, and visitors should wear sturdy footwear due to debris and uneven flooring throughout. It is advisable to stay on marked paths and watch for loose materials hanging from ceilings or walls.
The hall was recreated in several video games, including Call of Duty 4 and Metro Exodus, giving the space a second life in digital form. Players worldwide walk through virtual versions of the tiled corridors and the sports hall, making the architecture recognizable far beyond the exclusion zone.
