Chersonese Lighthouse, Maritime beacon at Cape Chersonese, Crimea.
Leuchtturm Chersones is a white tower standing 36 meters high on Cape Chersonese on the Black Sea coast, featuring a cylindrical base structure. Its light signal can be seen from up to 20 nautical miles, serving maritime navigation in and around Sevastopol harbor.
The structure was built in 1816 at the entrance to Sevastopol Bay to guide ships safely into the harbor. Following severe damage during World War II, the tower underwent major reconstruction in 1950 and was modernized.
The lighthouse appears on postage stamps from both Russia and Ukraine, reflecting its importance as a protected monument in the region. Its white silhouette has become a recognizable symbol in local imagery and identity.
The lighthouse is accessible by following a coastal path from Sevastopol, with guided tours available during daylight hours. Wear comfortable shoes as the path along the coast can be uneven, and the area is exposed to direct sun.
The tower has continuously served its original purpose since the 1800s and now uses modern navigation technology to guide ships. This makes it a rare example of a historic structure that has remained in active use as a navigational aid throughout its existence.
