Zatoka Lift Bridge, Combined railway and road bridge in Karolino-Buhaz Hromada, Ukraine
The Zatoka Lift Bridge spans the Dniester Estuary for approximately 350 meters and connects two regions via Highway H33 and the rail line to Odesa. Its lifting mechanism allows vessels to pass beneath while regular road and train traffic continues above.
Construction finished in 1955 and created the first direct land link between Odesa and the Budjak region near the Romanian border. This project opened a long-isolated area to broader trade and passenger movement.
The structure links two regions across the Dniester Estuary and serves as a vital connection in everyday life for local communities. People depend on it daily for work, commerce, and travel between neighboring areas.
You can walk or drive across the bridge, though pedestrian access may be limited in certain sections. When vessels are in the area, operations pause, so allow extra time if traveling during busy periods.
The lifting system underwent major overhaul between 2022 and 2023, significantly disrupting train schedules across the Odesa region. This modernization strengthened the infrastructure but required local transport routines to adapt completely.
