Château de Brosse, Medieval castle ruins in Chaillac, France
Château de Brosse is a medieval castle ruin in Chaillac featuring a circular keep surrounded by walls and several defensive towers. The complex shows construction from multiple periods spanning the 10th to 15th centuries.
The fortress was built in the 10th century under orders from the Viscount of Limoges. During the Hundred Years War, English forces set fire to it, causing extensive destruction that shaped its current appearance.
The site reflects changes in military building methods across different periods of the Middle Ages. You can see how defensive design evolved by looking at the various tower styles and wall constructions scattered throughout the grounds.
Access is restricted since the site is private property and requires advance permission to visit. The uneven terrain among the ruins makes it unsuitable for wheelchair users and requires reasonable mobility to explore safely.
A surviving medieval gate still features an undefended wicket opening that once allowed controlled viewing. A rare polygonal tower stands as part of what was once the residential wing of the fortress.
