Leeds Bradford Airport, International airport in Yeadon, England
Leeds Bradford Airport is an international airport in Yeadon, a small town northwest of Leeds in England. The terminal building spreads across several levels with check-in halls, shops and dining areas for passengers traveling to destinations across Europe.
The airport opened in October 1931 as Leeds and Bradford Municipal Aerodrome and was initially used mainly for general aviation and pilot training. Over the decades the facility developed into a commercial airport serving the growing travel needs of Yorkshire.
The airport takes its name from the two major cities Leeds and Bradford, which joined forces in 1931 to create a shared air link for Yorkshire. Today travelers from across the region use the connections to southern Europe, Mediterranean islands and business centers on the continent.
The airport lies about 11 kilometers (7 miles) northwest of Leeds city center and offers parking for several thousand vehicles. Travelers can use Fast Track security lanes to move through check-in more quickly.
In 1986 an Air France Concorde landed at the airport, putting the technical capacity of the facility to the test. The supersonic aircraft was at that time one of the fastest passenger planes in the world.
