London Luton Airport, International airport in Luton, United Kingdom
London Luton Airport is an airport in Luton north of the British capital, operating connections to 145 destinations across the European continent and within Britain. The terminal includes arrival and departure halls, check-in areas, and baggage reclaim on multiple levels.
The Royal Air Force used the site during the Second World War for fighter aircraft and military transport flights. After the war, the site gradually transformed from a military base into a commercial airport for scheduled services.
The exhibition spaces inside the terminal rotate regularly and present works by artists from Bedfordshire and school projects from surrounding towns. These gallery areas offer passengers insight into the creative life of the region north of London.
Luton Airport Parkway train station sits a few hundred meters from the terminal and is served by a regularly running shuttle bus. From there, trains run to central London in about 25 minutes and connect the airport to the national rail network.
The site sits at an elevation of 160 meters (525 feet) above sea level and therefore requires special landing and takeoff procedures that pilots must account for. The grounds also house facilities for aircraft maintenance and pilot training, which operate throughout the year.
