Belfast International Airport, International airport in Aldergrove, United Kingdom
Belfast International Airport is an international commercial traffic aerodrome in Aldergrove, United Kingdom, serving both scheduled flights and general aviation. The facility features two paved asphalt runways spanning 2,780 meters and 1,891 meters, along with a passenger terminal that includes check-in halls and apron areas.
The site first served as a Royal Flying Corps training ground during World War I and opened to civil aviation in 1922. Scheduled passenger services began only in 1933, when the site officially expanded for regular traffic operations.
The airport grounds sit in Aldergrove, roughly 18 miles (29 kilometers) northwest of Belfast, linking Northern Ireland to dozens of European destinations. The terminal displays modern architecture with tall glass fronts that open views of the apron, and it offers several cafés and shops in the departure areas.
Express bus links run regularly to Belfast city center and provide connections to regional railway stations across Northern Ireland. The terminal includes accessible pathways and lifts to all levels, and the area in front of the building offers parking and pick-up zones for arriving travelers.
The airport building is currently undergoing a major upgrade of security equipment planned for completion in summer 2024, designed to reduce processing times at checkpoints. The site receives more than 5.9 million passengers per year and has grown from a military training ground in the 1920s to a key hub today.
