George Best Belfast City Airport, International airport in Port of Belfast, Northern Ireland
George Best Belfast City Airport is a commercial airport in the Port of Belfast with a single asphalt runway and a terminal close to the city center. The facility sits just a few kilometers from downtown and connects Northern Ireland to destinations across Britain and Europe through scheduled and charter flights.
The facility opened in 1937 under the name Sydenham and served both civilian and military purposes during the Second World War. After decades of changing operators and expansions, it received its current name in 2006 to honor the Northern Irish sportsman.
The airport takes its name from a Belfast-born footballer who played for Manchester United and whose fame extends far beyond the pitch. His image and legacy shape the terminal atmosphere through photos, quotes and references that remind visitors of his life.
Travelers reach the terminal by train from Sydenham station, which sits right next to the airport building and connects to Belfast Central. Bus lines run regularly to and from the city center, giving visitors several options for getting there.
Because of nearby residential areas, stricter noise reduction rules apply here than at many other commercial airports in Europe. Aircraft with high noise levels are either restricted or excluded entirely from operations to protect local residents.
