Doncaster Sheffield Airport, International airport in Finningley, England
Doncaster Sheffield Airport is an international aerodrome in Finningley, South Yorkshire, serving scheduled flights across Europe along with charter and cargo operations. The terminal offers departure and arrival zones with security checks, baggage handling, and passenger facilities distributed across multiple levels.
The site opened in 1915 as Finningley Airfield for military purposes and remained a Royal Air Force base through both World Wars and the postwar decades. Following the closure of its air force use, the site opened as a civilian airport in 2005 and now carries the name of the two nearest major cities.
The initial name Robin Hood Airport generated discussions about regional identity and the connection to Yorkshire's historical narratives.
The airport sits between Doncaster and Sheffield with direct connection to the M18 motorway, allowing onward travel in many directions. Most visitors arrive by car or coach services, as there is no direct rail link.
The runway was designated as an emergency landing site for NASA space shuttles during the active program and was among the few European locations with this function. This suitability stemmed from the length of the strip and the open space surrounding the site.
