Potters Bar, Railway town in Hertsmere, England
Potters Bar is a small town in Hertsmere, England, that stretches along the Great North Road and includes two shopping areas at Darkes Lane and High Street. The settlement grew around the railway station and now forms a continuous suburb north of London.
The settlement grew rapidly after 1850 when the Great Northern Railway opened a station here and attracted commuters from London. During the First World War, a German airship crashed nearby and its crew was buried in the local cemetery.
The Wyllyotts Theatre hosts performances by local groups and changing exhibitions in the attached museum, which displays Roman finds from the surrounding area. Visitors also see fragments of a German airship that crashed nearby during the First World War.
The railway station sits centrally and offers regular trains to London King's Cross in about 20 minutes. The High Street and Darkes Lane form the two centers for shops, cafés, and everyday errands.
Some gravestones in the local cemetery carry German inscriptions and commemorate the crew of Zeppelin L31, which was shot down during an air raid in 1916. The burial site lies quietly among residential streets and is occasionally visited by history enthusiasts.
