Mid Sussex, Parliamentary constituency in the United Kingdom, 1974 onwards
Mid Sussex is a parliamentary constituency in South East England that includes two main towns, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill, both easily reached by train and car. The southern part falls within the South Downs National Park with rolling hills and open countryside, while the surrounding area consists of quiet villages and farmland.
The area was established as a single district in 1974, taking its name from the historic county of Sussex. It has undergone several boundary changes over the decades, formed from parts of the historic counties of East Sussex and West Sussex, with current boundaries primarily centered in West Sussex.
The name Mid Sussex refers to the middle section of the historic county. Local communities gather regularly at village fairs, farmers' markets, and village halls, where neighbors share food, crafts, and stories that have been passed down through generations.
The two main towns are well connected by trains to Brighton, London, and nearby airports, while the M23 and A23 motorways make car travel straightforward. Buses run regularly, allowing travel without a car, and cycling, walking, and horse riding are popular ways to explore the agricultural landscape.
The southern portion extends into the South Downs National Park, where the landscape becomes hilly and visitors can discover farms that sometimes welcome guests. This feature makes the area distinct, as it combines rural heritage with accessible natural spaces that remain largely untouched by heavy development.
