Wester Kames Castle, Category A listed castle in Port Bannatyne, Scotland
Wester Kames Castle is a four-story tower structure in Port Bannatyne on the Isle of Bute, with a five-story stair tower attached at its northwest corner. The building combines original foundations with extensive reconstruction work completed in the late 1800s.
The original tower house was built around 1700 and gradually deteriorated until only its foundation remained by 1895. Scottish architect Robert Weir Schultz carried out a complete restoration in 1897, rebuilding the structure in the Scottish Baronial style.
Architect Robert Weir Schultz executed a precise restoration in 1897, creating a tower that exemplifies Scottish Baronial architecture of that period.
The location sits near the coast with views across the Firth of Clyde, making it an easy spot to visit during a walk through the area. Another historic fortification called Kames Castle stands nearby to the south, allowing visitors to see multiple monuments in one outing.
A distinctive line of brickwork visible on the facade shows exactly where the original walls end and the 19th-century reconstruction begins. This architectural detail silently tells the story of decay and rebirth.
