RAF Binbrook, air force station in England
RAF Binbrook was a Royal Air Force station near Brookenby in Lincolnshire that operated from 1938 until the 1990s. The site comprised runways, hangars, and operational buildings, many of which still stand today while much of the area has been converted to industrial and residential use.
The station was established in 1938 shortly before the Second World War and initially served as a base for bombers such as the Vickers Wellington and Avro Lancaster. After the war it shifted to fighter jets including the Gloster Javelin and later the English Electric Lightning before closing in the early 1990s.
The memorial parks on the site honor the Australian 460 Squadron and other crews who served from this base during the Second World War. These spaces remain quiet places of remembrance where visitors can acknowledge those who flew from here.
The site is partially open to the public and features a heritage centre around the old control tower with exhibits and historical information. Visitors should be aware that some areas are still undergoing demolition work and it is important to follow safety guidelines and avoid restricted zones.
An English Electric Lightning aircraft, XR724, is maintained by volunteers and kept in flying condition as a living memorial to the past. The site was also used as a filming location for the 1989 film Memphis Belle, giving the airfield a cinematic connection to wartime history.
