Aberfan disaster, Coal-waste landslide in South Wales
The Aberfan disaster was a catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip in Wales, on 21 October 1966.
The event killed 116 children and 28 adults as it engulfed the Pantglas Junior School and other buildings in the village of Aberfan.
The Aberfan Disaster has influenced a change in UK law regulating the management of waste heaps.
A memorial garden now marks the site of the school.
It led to the establishment of the Aberfan Disaster Memorial Fund, which raised significant amount for the victims' families.
