Hampstead, Residential district in North London, England.
Hampstead is a residential district in the northern part of London, located in the borough of Camden about six kilometers from the city center. Old lanes run between rows of terraced houses, and large green spaces such as Hampstead Heath border directly on the built-up streets.
The settlement was founded in the early medieval period and remained a village outside London until the 19th century. The railway reached the area in the 1860s, and the district grew rapidly into a residential neighborhood for families from the city.
Narrow lanes hold houses from the 18th century with brick facades and white window frames, now used as homes and shops. The district has many small cafés and bookshops where neighbors meet and walkers stop after walking through the heath.
The Underground station sits in the heart of the district and is easy to reach from the city center. Many paths lead from the streets directly onto the open heath, and you can walk there for several hours.
On Parliament Hill stands a large mound from which you can see the skyscrapers of the City on clear days. This rise was once a popular spot for flying kites, and many locals still go there today to look down on the city from above.
