Cheltenham College, Independent boarding school in Cheltenham, England
Cheltenham College is a boarding and day school in the town of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, offering places for more than 700 pupils between the ages of 13 and 18. The main building from the mid-19th century shows tall pointed arches, towers and stone walls in a Gothic Revival style, surrounded by extensive sports facilities and more recent classroom blocks.
The school was founded in 1841 by residents of the town who wanted to create a modern educational institution modeled on the older public schools. The original building later received Grade II* listed status because of its special importance to British school architecture of the Victorian era.
The 19th-century chapel stands at the center of the campus and continues to serve as a gathering space for school services and ceremonies. Latin inscriptions on the walls of the older buildings recall the founding ideals and shape the academic atmosphere to this day.
The buildings sit along Bath Road in the east of Cheltenham and are surrounded by a fenced site. Visitors should arrange an appointment in advance, as access to the facilities is only possible with prior registration.
Several former pupils later reached top positions in government, military and the arts, including generals and judges from the British Empire. The cricketer Tom Graveney and the poet James Elroy Flecker are among the best known graduates of this school.
