Embley Park, Grade II listed park and garden in Wellow, England
Embley Park is a 126-hectare estate with 8 hectares of formal gardens, woodland areas, and maintained lawns surrounding a historic red brick mansion with stone details. The grounds are accessible through wrought-iron gates on the A27 road, with two early 19th-century yellow brick lodges marking the entrance.
The estate dates to the 10th century when it belonged to Romsey Abbey, and later served as the childhood home of Florence Nightingale in the 19th century. This connection to the famous nurse shaped the property during that era.
The gardens show traditional English landscape design with terraces and gravel paths, where native and foreign trees are arranged in formal patterns. Visitors can explore these carefully designed spaces and notice the craftsmanship that went into creating each section.
The best way to explore is to walk slowly through the different areas and discover the varied landscapes. The formal gardens and woodland paths offer many options for walks of different lengths, so you can adjust your visit to your pace.
A striking feature is the 100-meter terrace extending from the south garden front, offering broad views across the grounds. A fishing lake created between the late 18th and 19th centuries complements this vista and provides a quiet focal point.
