Derwent Valley Mills, Industrial heritage site in Belper, England.
Derwent Valley Mills is an industrial complex along the river featuring multiple cotton-spinning mills and support buildings from the industrial period. The site preserves the original infrastructure, including water power systems and machinery rooms used for textile manufacturing.
Richard Arkwright established the first water-powered cotton mill at this location in the 1770s, marking the beginning of factory production methods. This innovation transformed textile manufacturing and helped establish the model for modern industrial production across Britain.
The mills and surrounding worker housing show how a complete community formed around textile production in the 1700s. The way buildings and homes are arranged reveals how deeply the factory shaped daily life for everyone living here.
Access around the complex is mostly on foot, with some buildings having stairs and others being ground-level. The best time to explore is during daylight hours when light enters the factory buildings and more details are visible.
The complex contains over 800 protected structures, including the original water wheels and power systems that changed how textiles were made. These preserved mechanical systems show how the river's force powered hundreds of spinning frames at once.
