Tilbury, Port town in Thurrock, England
Tilbury is a port town on the north bank of the River Thames estuary in Thurrock, stretching over several kilometers of quays that serve as a major container shipping center. Modern docks allow large vessels to load and unload regardless of tidal conditions.
The docks were built between 1884 and 1886, transforming former farmland into a major port for eastern England. Earlier, in 1588, Queen Elizabeth I visited this location to address troops facing possible Spanish invasion.
The name Tilbury comes from Old English meaning "Til's fortress," a reminder of the settlement's ancient roots in this riverside location.
The location is accessible by public transport and offers access to riverside areas, though some harbor zones are restricted. Coming early in the day helps you observe the busy shipping activity without crowds.
The SS Empire Windrush arrived here in 1948, bringing the first major waves of Caribbean immigrants to Britain. This event made Tilbury a symbol of diversity and social change in British society.
