The red and yellow sandstone Romanesque cathedral stands at the heart of Kirkwall, dominating the skyline of the Orkney Islands capital.
Construction began in 1137 under Earl Rognvald to honor his uncle Magnus Erlendsson, taking three centuries to complete its current architectural form.
The cathedral contains numerous memorials dedicated to notable Orcadians and serves as a center for concerts, exhibitions, and national remembrance ceremonies.
Visitors can access the cathedral between April and September from Monday to Saturday 9:00-17:00 and Sundays 13:00-17:00, with reduced hours during winter months.
The cathedral remains the only complete Medieval cathedral in Scotland and contains the skeletal remains of its namesake saint within its walls.
