The Big Tree, Kirkwall, Heritage tree in Kirkwall, Scotland
The Big Tree stands on Albert Street in Kirkwall, growing for over 200 years as a prominent sycamore tree in the urban landscape.
In 1875, the Kirkwall Town Council paid five pounds to Thomas Sclater to preserve this tree, which was originally part of his private garden.
The sycamore received recognition as Scotland's Tree of the Year in 2017, following a nomination from the Kirkwall Community Council.
The Orkney Islands Council maintains the tree's health through regular care, including a 2009 operation to hollow its dead core and add metal support.
This sycamore grows in the largely treeless Orkney Islands, serving as a central meeting point for generations of local residents.
