The Big Tree, Kirkwall

The Big Tree, Kirkwall, Heritage tree in Kirkwall, Scotland

The Big Tree is a sycamore standing on Albert Street in Kirkwall, which has grown there for more than 200 years and forms a distinctive part of the town center. The tree underwent restoration work in 2009 when its hollow core was treated and metal supports were installed to help it continue growing.

The tree originally grew on private land and was purchased by Kirkwall Town Council in 1875 for five pounds to ensure its preservation for the public. This early decision to protect it reflects how important the community considered it even then.

The sycamore holds special meaning as a gathering place where locals have met for generations to talk and rest. Its presence in a treeless landscape makes it a living landmark that shapes how people experience their town center.

The tree is located on Albert Street in the town center and is easy to find when walking through Kirkwall. It stands in an open, accessible spot with no special hours or restrictions to visit.

The tree grows in an island group that has very few trees naturally, making it exceptionally rare in this landscape. Its size and age make it visibly stand out in the otherwise open terrain, drawing attention simply by its presence.
