The institution began in 1891 as Battersea Polytechnic Institute in the Battersea district of London and moved its activities gradually to Guildford after receiving a royal charter in 1966. The relocation was completed by 1970 and marked the beginning of its current structure.
The campus serves as a meeting point for students from over 140 countries, reflected in the lively common areas and different student organizations. Many faculty buildings carry names of significant scientists and founders of the institution.
Visitors can explore the grounds on foot, with some areas open to the public and others reserved for students and staff. Surrey Research Park sits slightly away from the main campus and houses more than 110 companies focused on research and development.
Joint projects with King's College London and Dresden University of Technology led to advances in mobile and satellite communication. Some laboratories and research facilities occasionally open to the public during special events.
