Kirklees Stadium, Multi-purpose sports stadium in Huddersfield, England
Kirklees Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue in Huddersfield, a town in northern England, that serves as home ground for one football club and one rugby league team. The four stands together hold around 24,500 people, and beneath the seating areas there are numerous spaces used for events outside match days.
The venue opened in August 1994 and replaced the old Leeds Road ground where both clubs had previously played their matches. Designed by the architect Populous, it received the Building of the Year award from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1995.
Locals often refer to the venue by its sponsor name, and it brings together football supporters following the club in the second or third tier of English football with fans of the rugby league side. On match days, the stands fill with people from the town and surrounding areas who come to cheer their teams.
The venue sits close to the M62 and M1 motorways and can be reached easily from both directions. Beneath the stands, 47 function rooms are available year-round for conferences and corporate meetings.
The pitch surface is supported by a special aeration system beneath the turf that helps keep it in good condition for both football and rugby. This shared use requires careful maintenance, as the two sports place different demands on the playing surface.
