Highfield Road, Former football stadium in Hillfields, England
Highfield Road was a football stadium in Hillfields with one of the largest playing surfaces in English football. The venue featured four distinct stands arranged around the rectangular grass field.
The stadium opened in 1899 and served Coventry City Football Club as its home for 106 years until closure in 2005. During this long span, it became rooted in the team's history and the region's football heritage.
The stadium sat within the neighborhood fabric, with houses standing between the stands and match day crowds moving through local streets. This closeness to residents made it a gathering place woven into everyday community life.
The venue held 23,489 spectators and adopted an all-seater configuration during the 1990s to meet safety standards. Visitors should know that what remains is a historical site with the original facility no longer in active use.
The final match saw Coventry City defeat Derby County 6-2, followed by an Elton John concert closing the ground. This celebratory finish marked the end of more than a century of football at the site.
