HMNB Clyde, Royal Navy base in Argyll and Bute, United Kingdom
The facility occupies several kilometers of shoreline on Gare Loch and includes docking areas, maintenance halls, and structures dedicated to nuclear-powered submarines. The infrastructure consists of secured water zones, berths, and technical buildings connected by roads and barriers.
The Royal Navy opened the site in the mid-1960s to create a permanent home for nuclear-powered submarines. The development continued over several decades and made it the sole homeport for this class of vessels in the United Kingdom.
The facility employs 3,000 service personnel and 4,000 civilian specialists, creating a mixed military-civilian community in the Scottish Highlands.
The site is a restricted military area and completely closed to the public. Nearby towns are located several kilometers away, and access roads are monitored and secured by checkpoints.
The facility is split between two separate locations: Faslane for submarine operations and Coulport for weapons storage and maintenance. The two sections are several kilometers apart and linked by secured transport routes.
