Armitt Library, Library and museum in Ambleside, England
Armitt Library is a museum and library in Ambleside dedicated to local and natural history of the Lake District. The building houses thousands of books, manuscripts, paintings, and historical documents that show the history and nature of the region.
Mary Louisa Armitt founded the museum in 1909 to preserve the intellectual and artistic works of the region. She built on an older book collection that had been maintained by the Ambleside Book Society for years.
The collection displays personal items and works from writers and artists who lived and worked in the region. Visitors can see how these creative people spent their time in the English lakes and what inspired them.
Plan your visit wearing comfortable shoes, as the rooms are spread across multiple levels with some stairs throughout. It helps to allow 1 to 2 hours to explore the exhibitions and collections at a leisurely pace.
Historic photographs by Herbert Bell show old views of Lake District landscapes and invite visitors to compare those same places today. These images help people understand how the nature and villages have changed over time.
