Spilsby, Market town in East Lindsey, England
Four main streets extend from an open market square at the center of Spilsby, forming the core layout of this Lincolnshire settlement.
Vikings established the settlement, naming it 'Spila's-by', and the town received its first market charter from John de Beke in 1255.
The marketplace features a medieval buttercross monument where local traders displayed their goods during centuries of continuous market activities.
Markets occur every Monday in the town square, offering local produce, vegetables, and various goods through traditional auctions called 'the stones'.
Sir John Franklin, who fought at Copenhagen and Trafalgar before becoming Tasmania's governor, was born in Spilsby and has a statue in the market place.
