Bleaklow, High gritstone summit in Peak District, England
Bleaklow is a high gritstone summit in the Peak District that rises 633 meters and dominates the surrounding peat moorland. The peak is marked by a prominent stone cairn at its highest point and features numerous water-carved channels across the plateau.
The area served as an important waypoint for travelers crossing the Peak District landscape. In November 1948, a US military aircraft crashed on the summit, resulting in a memorial being installed decades later.
The Peak District National Park Authority maintains this moorland through conservation projects that protect native plant species and restore peat formations.
The terrain requires solid navigation skills because water-carved channels and unpredictable weather can make routes unclear. Visitors should expect wet ground and bring appropriate gear for moorland conditions.
On clear days, visitors can see across multiple counties from the summit platform, with Snowdonia visible far on the horizon. This expansive vista makes the spot popular for long-distance photography.
