Girton College, College of University of Cambridge in South Cambridgeshire, England
Girton College is a college of the University of Cambridge in South Cambridgeshire, England, with red-brick Victorian buildings set on grounds northwest of the city. The campus includes gardens, sports fields, and teaching areas spread across a large site with space for recreation and academic life.
Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon founded the college in 1869 as the first women's college in Cambridge, initially in a different location before moving to its current site. The college opened its doors to male students in 1976, becoming coeducational.
The library serves as a workspace where students prepare for exams and coursework throughout the academic year. During exam season, the reading rooms fill with undergraduates reviewing notes and writing papers.
Students receive guaranteed housing for three years in rooms ranging from Victorian-style units in the main building to modern apartments. The location outside the city center means planning a walk or bike ride to reach central Cambridge.
The college operates the only heated indoor swimming pool among all Cambridge colleges, open to students and staff year-round. The pool complements other sports facilities on campus and offers a rare opportunity for indoor training.
