Greenwich, National Rail and Docklands Light Railway station
Greenwich is a railway station in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, London, served by trains daily. The station has four platforms: two for main line trains and two for the Docklands Light Railway, with ramps and lifts for accessible access.
The station opened in 1840 and is one of the oldest railway stations in the world. It was part of the London and Greenwich Railway, the first steam railway in London built for passengers, constructed on a brick arch viaduct.
The name Greenwich comes from Old English meaning "green bay". The station sits near the Royal Observatory and Prime Meridian line, making it a reference point recognized worldwide.
The station is within easy walking distance from the town center, roughly 11 minutes on foot. Visitors can also catch buses or use mobile apps to check real-time train departures and purchase tickets.
The station was among the first built on elevated structures rather than at ground level. This design allowed the railway to pass through densely populated South London without demolishing homes.
