Battle of Culloden

The Culloden battlefield is an open heath in the Scottish Highlands near Inverness, where one of Britain's most decisive military confrontations took place. The terrain spreads flat with rough grass, heather, and boggy ground that still reflects the challenging conditions faced by the opposing forces during the fighting.

The battle occurred on 16 April 1746 and ended the Jacobite uprising, a conflict rooted in disputed succession to the Scottish throne since 1688. This defeat marked a turning point that fundamentally altered Highland society and Scottish political identity for generations to come.

The battle remains central to Highland identity as a moment of tragedy and defiance that shaped Scottish consciousness. The terrain was deliberately chosen for battle despite being poorly suited to Highland fighting methods, with boggy ground and wet conditions that hampered traditional charges. This choice proved catastrophic and illustrates how landscape itself became a decisive factor in the outcome.
