Belvidere is a city in northern Illinois that spreads along the Kishwaukee River. Its streets connect the community to major transportation routes including Interstate 90.
Pioneers established a settlement in 1835 near the Kishwaukee River and initially called it Elysian Fields. The community was officially founded as Belvidere in 1836 and later became the county seat of Boone County.
Painted murals throughout downtown tell stories of local heritage and community pride. The Boone County Historical Society Museum displays artifacts that connect residents and visitors to the region's past.
The city has several public schools including seven grade schools, two middle schools, and two high schools serving students from the area. Visitors can walk through downtown easily to explore local shops and cultural sites.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Pettit Memorial Chapel in the local cemetery, which is the only chapel the renowned architect ever created. This building remains a rare example of his work on a smaller scale.
