Oval Office, Presidential study in West Wing, Washington, D.C., United States

The Oval Office features large south-facing windows, built-in bookcases along western walls, and a fireplace at its northern end point.

William Howard Taft established this presidential workspace in 1909 after selecting architect Nathan C. Wyeth through a design competition for West Wing expansion.

The room displays carefully selected American artworks, presidential portraits, and photographs that represent different periods of United States history.

Four doors connect the office to the Rose Garden, private dining area, West Wing corridor, and presidential secretary's workspace.

The design draws inspiration from the Blue Room's curved walls, which George Washington incorporated for formal receptions called levees in Philadelphia.
