The county stretches across 564 square miles of land with the Kaskaskia River forming its northern border and Nashville serving as the county seat.
Washington County separated from St Clair County on January 2, 1818, marking a significant administrative reorganization within Illinois Territory as populations expanded.
The area attracted numerous settlers from Kentucky in the early 1800s, followed by substantial immigration waves from Germany, Poland, Ireland, and England.
The Washington County Judicial Center, located at 125 E Elm Street in Nashville, operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The Lively Massacre occurred near Little Crooked Creek in 1813, preceding the establishment of Washington County State Recreation Area in 1959.
