Lebanon Historic District, Historic district in Lebanon, Illinois.
The Lebanon Historic District encompasses commercial buildings, residential neighborhoods, and McKendree University spread across an irregular pattern. The structures along the main streets represent construction from different eras and architectural traditions.
McKendree University was established in 1828, marking the start of organized settlement in the area. The construction of the Mermaid House Hotel in 1830 followed and became an important landmark as the town expanded.
German immigrants arrived in the 1830s and shaped the architectural character of the town through their building traditions and community values. Their presence remains visible in the style of homes and public buildings throughout the district.
Walk through the district to see the different sections and architectural styles at your own pace. Starting from the university area or the commercial streets makes it easy to explore the residential neighborhoods and understand how the areas connect.
The district includes an archaeological site at the city boundaries where evidence of earlier human settlement has been found. This location is less noticed than the standing buildings but tells the story of people living here before the town was formally founded.
