Watonwan County, Administrative county in southern Minnesota, United States
Watonwan County encompasses 440 square miles of agricultural land with low rolling hills and several protected wildlife management areas throughout its territory.
The county formation occurred on November 6, 1860, when it separated from Brown County and received its name from the Watonwan River meaning fish bait.
The county population of 11,253 residents includes substantial Hispanic and Latino communities, forming 28.7 percent of the total inhabitants as of 2020.
The St. James Municipal Airport, located three miles east of the county seat, provides regional air transportation services for the surrounding communities.
The Soil and Water Conservation District manages multiple environmental programs, including annual tree sales and native plant initiatives for local restoration projects.
