Colonial Heights

Colonial Heights is an independent city in Virginia situated along the northern bank of the Appomattox River. The area spreads across elevated terrain and is crossed by major transportation routes including Interstate 95 and US Route 1.

The area was originally home to Algonquian-speaking peoples before later European settlement and development. The city became independent in 1948 after separating from Chesterfield County and establishing its own governance.

The city maintains nine public parks where residents gather and spend time outdoors together. Fort Clifton Park holds special meaning for the community, as it preserves Civil War remains and hosts local events throughout the year.

The city is easily accessible via Interstate 95 and US Route 1, providing good connections to Richmond and neighboring areas. Visitors will find nine parks to explore, which are walkable and have multiple access points throughout the area.

During the Revolutionary War, Continental Army troops positioned artillery on elevated ground overlooking Petersburg, which gave the city its name. This strategic vantage point was crucial to military operations in the region and is still remembered in local stories today.
