Salem

Salem is an independent city in Virginia that spans residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and educational institutions across its land. The city operates its own courthouse and municipal services separate from the surrounding county.

The city received its official charter in 1806, four years after its founding, possibly named after the New Jersey city of Salem by its founder William Bryan. This early charter gave the settlement its formal status and legal structure.

The Salem Red Sox baseball team draws crowds to local games that bring neighbors together throughout the year. These sporting events are part of the rhythm of daily life in this small city.

Archaeological findings show that people lived in this area as far back as 8,000 years ago when Native American peoples inhabited the land. The Totero people were among the earliest inhabitants before European settlement began.
