Winnebago County encompasses 579 square miles of territory, including 144 square miles of water bodies with Lake Winnebago as its eastern boundary.
The county, established in 1848, received its name from the Native American Ho-Chunk people, formerly known as the Winnebago, who inhabited these lands.
