Oshkosh is a county seat in Winnebago County in the state of Wisconsin, positioned on the western shore of Lake Winnebago where the Fox River flows through the town. The center spreads along the river, while residential neighborhoods and campus grounds extend toward the lake.
A trading post appeared here in 1818, and the settlement received its name in 1839 after a Menominee chief. Official incorporation followed in 1853, when the timber industry already shaped its growth.

The lumber trade of the 19th century gave the place the nickname Sawdust City, still heard in conversation and seen on local signs today. Each year thousands of aircraft and aviation fans gather for a large meeting at the nearby airport.
