The Black Chamber, also known as MI-8, was the United States' first peacetime cryptanalytic organization.
Operational from 1919 to 1929, it was funded by both the U.S. Army and State Department.
Its existence was kept secret until after World War II.
It was responsible for decoding diplomatic communications, aiding in international relations.
Despite its disbandment, it laid the groundwork for the National Security Agency.
