Formed in 1816 from Harrison County, Lewis County was named after Colonel Charles Lewis, who died in the Battle of Point Pleasant.
The county maintains five distinct magisterial districts, each representing different communities and local governance structures within the territory.
The county seat of Weston centralizes administrative services, including vehicle licensing, tax payments, and permit applications for county residents.
In the 1990s, the county reorganized its districts, merging Collins Settlement with Court House and Hackers Creek with Skin Creek.
