Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, Gothic psychiatric hospital in Weston, United States.
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is a Gothic Revival hospital in Weston, West Virginia, measuring over 1,295 feet (395 meters) from end to end with wings set at staggered angles. The exterior walls are built from sandstone, while the foundations were hand-cut from stone.
The facility opened in 1864 with a capacity of 250 patients, but admissions grew until the population reached 2,600 people during the 1950s. It closed in 1994 after 130 years of operation.
The establishment followed the Kirkbride Plan, which integrated architectural elements such as large windows and long corridors to support mental health treatment.
The building now serves as a museum offering guided tours that display medical equipment and personal belongings. Tours lead through multiple floors and winding hallways, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
The grounds included a working farm, dairy, and cemetery where unclaimed deceased received numbered stones instead of engraved markers. Many of these numbers remain visible on the property today.
