The settlement originally carried the name Shermerville and was renamed in 1923, with the new designation referencing the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River. This renaming coincided with a period of growth and development in the Chicago suburbs.

The Ed Rudolph Velodrome offers an outdoor cycling track measuring 402 meters, where national-level races take place during the season. This facility is one of the few public velodromes in the Chicago area.
