Greenville, County seat in South Carolina, United States.
Greenville is the county seat of Greenville County in South Carolina and sits at 294 meters (964 feet) above sea level. Tree-lined streets, pedestrian bridges, and public squares characterize the downtown area, while parks along the Reedy River provide green spaces for residents and visitors.
The settlement developed from farmland and gained official town status in 1831. During the Industrial Revolution it became an important location for textile mills and developed a manufacturing economy.
Art galleries and performance spaces downtown showcase works by regional artists and host concerts and theater productions throughout the year. Festivals draw visitors from across the state and reflect the community's interest in live music and visual arts.
The city maintains a network of walking trails, including the 22-mile (35 km) Swamp Rabbit Trail that connects residential areas with parks and business districts. Downtown is easily explored on foot, with most points of interest within a short walk of each other.
The Liberty Bridge crosses the Reedy River falls and offers views of the cascading water from its curved suspension structure in the heart of downtown. This bridge leads through a park built on the grounds of former textile mills.
