Designed by James Renwick Jr., the construction of St. Patrick's Cathedral began in 1858 and was completed in 1878.

Recognized as an iconic symbol of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States, it operates as the seat of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.

The cathedral is open to visitation and mass participation from tourists and residents alike, although donations for renovation and upkeep are encouraged.
