Walnut Grove is a rural settlement in Redwood County, Minnesota, stretching along U.S. Route 14 and surrounded by groves of black walnut trees. The town covers roughly 1.06 square miles of flat prairie landscape and consists of a few blocks of houses, shops, and public buildings.
The settlement began as Walnut Station in 1874 and received its official incorporation in 1879. That year saw the establishment of the first local administration, while European immigrants shaped the townscape over the following decades.
The museum dedicated to the author preserves documents and objects from the time when her family lived here during the 1870s. Visitors follow the traces of literary characters through the town, which remains shaped by its storytelling tradition.
The town sits on a highway route, making it easy for travelers to reach while passing through southwestern Minnesota. The local school building also serves as a community center for events, while parking is available near the main street.
Between 2001 and 2006, the population composition changed with the arrival of Hmong families from Southeast Asia. This community now accounts for over 40 percent of students in the district and shapes the social life of the small town.
