Newington, Residential suburb in Hartford County, Connecticut.
Newington is a small town in Hartford County, Connecticut, covering about 13 square miles with two ponds and several streams running through it. The community sits directly next to Hartford and West Hartford, surrounded by quiet residential streets, scattered shopping centers and local parks.
The area started as a swampy section of Wethersfield called Pipestave Swamp before becoming independent in 1871. By that time, over 130 households had settled there, mostly working small farms and building a self-sufficient community.
The town library serves as a meeting point where neighbors gather for readings, classes and community programs throughout the week. Residents often stop by to exchange books, attend workshops or simply catch up with friends in the shared spaces.
The town runs on a council and manager system, with nine elected members setting local policies and an appointed official handling daily operations. Visitors will find public facilities along the main road and several parks that stay open during daylight hours.
Mill Pond Falls stands about 16 feet tall and is recognized as the smallest natural waterfall in the country. The little cascade sits tucked away in the town and often goes unnoticed, even though it is easy to reach on foot.
