Bronx Zoo, Zoo in The Bronx, US
The Bronx Zoo is a zoological park in The Bronx, New York, home to more than 4,000 animals from 650 species. The enclosures are organized by continent and climate zone, allowing visitors to walk through African savannas, Asian forests, and tropical rainforests.
The park opened in 1899 with 843 animals in 22 exhibits and was among the first large zoos in North America. Over the following decades, the grounds expanded and developed new concepts for naturalistic enclosures.
The name recalls the Bronck family, early settlers who farmed along a nearby river in the 17th century. Today, school groups from across the city visit to observe animals and learn about their habitats.
Visitors purchase their admission tickets online in advance for a specific day, as the number of guests is limited. On warm weekends, an early morning visit is advisable when the animals are still more active.
At the entrance stands the Rainey Memorial Gates, a bronze gateway created by sculptor Paul Manship in 1934. This sculptural ensemble is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features stylized animal figures.
